This weekend on a shoestring
It’s good to mix it up, try new things, right? Here’s your chance. For less than $5 cover, you can check out new art, attend a street festival, save the planet, listen to Christian thrash and then soothe your throbbing eardrums with mellow indie-pop.
Party with the best on Sunday, Oct. 25
Back in the day, Xpress rewarded its reader-voted Best of WNC winners with (curb your enthusiasm) a plaque. That's cool and all, but most of us would agree that nothing says "Congratulations!" quite like a big fat party. So, last year Xpress got thinking, not only is the Best of WNC winners circle populated by talented folks, but when we're talking musicians, artists, dancers, chefs, bakers and brew masters, we're pretty much talking about a ready-made celebration. Food, drink and entertainment: The only missing ingredient is an audience to enjoy the revelry.

This weekend on a shoestring
Yes, this is still the weekend on a shoestring, but a not-to-be-missed free event popped up on a Wednesday. So get your party on early and set the tone for the next several days worth of fun and inexpensive events (including a free MySpace Secret Show with Baroness, pictured here, on Friday).
Put a bow on it
A Mountain Homecoming is the name of the Asheville Symphony's Saturday, Oct. 17, concert. The description reads, "We continue to present music of exotic regions." Featured composers include Estonian-born Arvo Part, the Germans Felix Mendelssohn and Johann Sebastian Bach and French Impressionist composer Joseph-Maurice Ravel. Is it a bit of a contradiction to feature such […]
Soundtrack
If it seems like Asheville music has evolved into a heady brew of world beat, experimental, indie rock and quirky pop, these four discs — all recently released by well-respected Asheville-based songwriters and musicians — prove that roots music (namely Americana) is alive and well. • Long Days Above Ground by Pierce Edens and The […]
