The Transylvania Community Arts Council has announced its summer fundraiser – a Duck Race for Kreative Kids. The Duck Race will be held on Monday, July 4th at Brevard College near the gymnasium on Kings Creek. Ducks will launch at 6 pm.

Great Smoky Mountains hosts Music in the American Wild
Great Smoky Mountains National Park invites the public to celebrate the National Park Service Centennial with Music in the American Wild for two live performances of music from eleven composers and seven performers, all affiliated with Eastman School of Music in upstate New York. During its meeting on Tuesday, May 31, the board heard concerns about attracting and retaining teachers amid budget requests from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools.

Fairview Volunteer Fire Department receives Homeland Security Grant
The Fairview Volunteer Fire Department in Buncombe County received the grant which comes in the third round of this year’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program (AFG). The AFG Program aims to help firefighters and first responders throughout the country. Local departments apply for the grants through a program administered by the Grant Programs Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

Asheville business to hold LGBTQ nonprofit fundraiser
On Saturday, June 11, a group of Asheville businesses will donate a percentage of their proceeds to LGBTQ nonprofits to protest House Bill 2. Businesses have elected to donate anywhere from 1% to 20% of Saturday’s proceeds to an LGBTQ nonprofit of their choice.
AARP hires outreach specialist for Western North Carolina
Reflecting the increasing number of older adults in North Carolina, the 1.1 million-member state affiliate of AARP is also growing and is extending its service to communities in Western North Carolina. National Trails Day celebration includes Mountains-to-Sea Trail section opening
North Carolina state park officials will join Carolina Mountain Club (CMC) volunteers June 4 for the grand opening of a new 20-mile section of the Mountains-to-Sea (MTS) State Trail. The new trail section begins at the Blue Ridge Parkway and travels down BIA 407 for four miles through the Eastern Cherokee Reservation and then along the Blue Ridge Parkway for 16 miles to Balsam Gap.
