Asheville moviegoers will get another shot at seeing the local kung-fu spoof flick Golden Blade III: Return of the Monkey’s Uncle Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 and 10 p.m. at the Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company. The movie, from film maker T.J. Wiedow, was the favorite local movie of Xpress readers in last year’s Best of WNC poll.

Buncombe Commissioners: Jan. 22 meeting preview
If the major items on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners seem familiar, that’s because they are. The board will consider two proposals that it delayed from the Jan. 8 meeting: a request for 10 more full-time sheriff’s office employees and the appointment of a monitoring board for the pollution at the former CTS plant.
Duncan denies current deputies are targets in Medford investigation
At the Jan. 15 detention hearing for former Sheriff Bobby Medford, Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Edwards said the ongoing investigation into extortion and corruption charges includes current deputies and law enforcement officers. However, Sheriff Van Duncan told Xpress that he doesn’t believe any deputies still serving in the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office are involved.

Medford released with conditions; ongoing investigation includes current deputies
Former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford will be released from jail with a set of stringent conditions until his March 25 trial on extortion charges, federal judge Thomas Ellis, III ruled this afternoon, reversing a previous ruling. In remarks during the hearing, Ellis and prosecuting attorneys said that the investigation is ongoing and that deputies within the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office are targets.
Wellington Estates documents reveal source of residents’ confusion
Documents provided by residents of the Wellington Estates Mobile Home Park, located off Airport Road in Arden, reveal that the owners of the park, the county’s largest, had repeatedly told residents that the park would not be sold. However, an online listing for the property, last confirmed Jan. 9, designates the property as “commercial” and for sale.

Medford gets court-appointed attorney, detention appealed
Earlier this afternoon, federal judge Dennis Howell appointed Asheville attorney Stephen Lindsay to defend former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford from federal extortion charges. On Jan. 15, Lindsay will try to reverse Howell’s order that Medford remain in jail until his March trial.
