Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Feb. 23-Mar. 1: Can Nicolas Cage drive out of hell on a hall pass?

Oh, yes, it’s a slack week at the movies—only two movies are opening. That said—and in full knowledge of the fact that I’m setting myself up for a huge letdown—one of those, Drive Angry 3D, is the first mainstream offering of 2011 I’ve actually been looking forward to. Come on, breathes there a fan of trash cinema who can resist the prospect of Nicolas Cage breaking out of hell in an effort to redeem himself by saving his infant grandchild from serving as the centerpiece of a human sacrifice by a cult? If so, you’re made of sterner stuff than I am.

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Open letter to moviegoers—and theaters

As a movie reviewer I probably spend more time in theaters than the average person. As a movie reviewer who—writing being a far from lucrative occupation—spent years working in theaters as well, I can guarantee that statement. In those capacities over the years, I’ve learned an awful lot about movie houses, how they work, what they do right, and what they do wrong. And I’ve also gotten a pretty good sense of what audiences do and don’t understand about how theaters work.

Just Go with It


The Story A philandering plastic surgeon uses a wedding ring as part of his pick-up routine -- until he falls in love and has to invent a soon-to-be-ex-wife for his girlfriend's benefit or be branded a pig. The Lowdown: Unfunny, unromantic and flat in the extreme. All the tired Sandler schtick is there, but the…

The Illusionist


The Story The story of a down-on-his-luck, aging French music-hall magician attempting to ply his art in a world that has moved on. The Lowdown: Perhaps the saddest film I've seen in a while, but its sadness is essential to the story and the film itself is brilliant in every respect.

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Valentine Variety

In case you missed the fact, Monday is Valentine’s Day, and the day means a movie, this year—well, you’re kind of out of luck. Or you’re not exactly choosy. First of all, let’s make one thing perfectly clear—no matter what it’s title may imply, there is no way in hell that Blue Valentine is a good idea for this purpose. (I’m assuming you aren’t wanting to break up, mind you.) That leaves you with what? Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in Just Go with It? This duo doesn’t exactly spell romance to me.

Sanctum


The Story Some people you won't give a hang about try to find their way out of a murky cave system before it floods completely. The Lowdown: Alternately tedious and unintentionally funny, with better than average 3D. If ever a subterranean adventure needed some lost-world dinosaurs, this is it.

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Feb. 9-15: I’m sure prepared to say “never”

The horror! The horror! It’s finally here—the dreaded week that finds Justin Bieber: Never Say Never comin’ at you in the miracle of 3D. It’s not as if it wasn’t a sufficiently terrifying prospect without 3D-ification. Thank God, there are five other movies opening, even if one of them stars Adam Sandler and another stars Channing Tatum. Relativity is a wondrous thing.
