Elitist Bastards: The Nexus of Mae West And Step Up 3D

In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther: consider the surprise revelation that Step Up 3D is tolerable when taken on its own terms, The Other Guys is passable, The Girl Who Played With Fire suffers from a touch of sequelitis, The Killer Inside Me is both likely to earn condemnation and praise, and that Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky can’t quite maintain the quality. They also discuss Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos, this week’s Thursday Horror Picture Show, and the Mae West double feature that makes up next week’s Asheville Film Society screening. And they even have a brief moment to ponder soon-to-open films Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The Expendables and Eat Pray Love.

Trimming the sails

Although rational people can (and obviously do) differ on a topic as complex as utility-scale wind power in Western North Carolina, some of the recent rhetoric has been less than rational. I've heard supporters of ridge-top wind turbines cast themselves as “real environmentalists” who are somehow superior to mere “conservationists," standing John Muir's epic battle […]

A message from Be Loved to… everybody

Prejudice is destructive to the fabric of our community. It is appalling that, on the one hand, Mountain Xpress can write such a powerful piece exposing the past prejudice of deeply rooted racism in “Back to Summerlane” [July 28 Xpress] and, in the same issue, promote such blatant prejudice against people who are homeless [in […]

Child hunger: You can make a difference

In the midst of summer’s abundance, child hunger is actually at its worst. Low-income families who rely on school meal programs to nourish their children during the school year are struggling to feed their families. Some of these children are able to access meals at summer feeding programs, but the vast majority — almost 92 […]

In my utopia, everyone is armed

Regarding Judith Hallock's letter [“No Nukes: Asheville Resident Explains Why She Protested at Oak Ridge, July 28, Xpress]: While I sincerely respect her patriotism, dedication to [the] cause and [the] courage of conviction demonstrated by facing the shame and inconvenience of arrest and prosecution (in a huge constitutional compromise, considering the supposed right to assemble […]

The success of our democracy depends on an educated citizenry — that just isn’t happening

The least restrictive environment policy of the early 1990s, as interpreted and implemented by the principals and boards of education in our public schools, has effectively prevented teaching and learning in most of the classrooms of our country for nearly 20 years now. This policy put students who could not and/or would not behave/learn into […]

The Suspect: Here Come the Mummies This band calls themselves “More Undead than Dick Clark.” If that doesn’t scare you, imagine a sex-obsessed Weird Al Yankovic making a funk album. This bandage-wrapped band (usually performing with eight or nine members) dare you not to dance as they play gems like, “Attack of the Weiner Man,” […]

Outdoors: 1,000 hikes

My continuing hiking adventure began with a flash of inspiration on an icy morning. "You know, I could do 1,000 different day hikes and write them down; all the ones we've already done would count toward the goal. I could put them in a book: It would be something for the family," I said to […]

Local B-boy Deported to Mexico

Recently, the b-boy troupe “Hunab Kru” were surprised to learn that one of their newest members was arrested, and would later be deported to Mexico. The circumstances are complex, and the impact of this loss has been felt by many.  On Saturday, August 7, the Hunab Kru attended a benefit for B-boy Aztec’s legal aid called “Rock or Flock” in Atlanta, Georgia.

Elitist Bastards: Cats, Dogs, Selkies and Schmucks

In this week’s Elitist Bastards Go To The Movies, Xpress film critics Ken Hanke and Justin Souther: delve into Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, Dinner for Schmucks, The Kids Are Alright, Charlie St. Cloud and Ondine; disagree with Wikipedia about Night Of The Demon (this week’s Thursday Horror Picture Show); roll their eyes at the runtime on Shortcuts (this week’s Asheville Film Society screening); and discuss the potential cinematic qualities of soon-to-open flicks The Other Guys and Step Up 3D.

The Profiler

The Suspect: The Rocketboys The band was formed in West Texas when its members met up while attending Abilene Christian University. Their first studio EP was an immediate success, and a few of the songs were featured on the television shows Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Real World. Paste Magazine featured the band’s […]

The monthly publication Bingo Bulletin believes that Mountain Xpress readers have received the wrong impression about it as a result of an article on the “Asheville Disclaimer” page. Xpress would like to make it clear that the article that appeared on page 80 of its July 21-27 edition was intended to be funny, as indicated […]

Last week Xpress reported that Marco’s Pizzeria would compete in the Asheville Pizza Wars at the Garage at Biltmore on Saturday, Aug. 14. Marco’s has declined to take part in the competition.

The full story about the benches

After reading the article [“Benched,” July 28 Xpress] and all the comments [online], I felt that there were a few things that needed to be said. The benches have been gone for over three months now, so it is weird to hear all the noise now. The smoking that was affecting our customers was the […]
