A rose is just a shrub that blooms — that's it; nothing strange or difficult or mysterious about it. Roses are just plants we grow in our gardens. Pretty in pink: Roses may not be as difficult to grow as you might think; but take a little care when picking a variety for your landscape. […]

A little French, a little Spain, a lot Carmen
High-school literature teachers would rejoice over the conversation I recently had with Asheville Lyric Opera's general and artistic director David Starkey. While talking about the ALO's upcoming production of Carmen— the Georges Bizet opera based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée — it became clear that the teachers were onto something […]
Just throwing a party
The western swing bands of the 1930s, '40s and '50s (Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys, Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies) were innovative musical ensembles, creating a new idiom of American music by cross-pollinating numerous vernacular styles like Dixieland swing, western cowboy songs, European polka, mountain fiddle tunes, Delta blues, New Orleans ragtime and […]
A Swannanoa greenway would be nice, but not by eminent domain
It would be very nice to have a greenway through Swannanoa, but the questions regarding eminent domain need to be addressed. There is a map floating around Swannanoa of a proposed greenway. There are properties along the route, and many are working farms. Imagine if you owned one of them, saw this map with a […]
The information you take in — like diet — can be wholesome or junk food
"Even the President of the United States chooses what he wants to hear," [said] Ray Tuers. We live in the Information Age. We are constantly bombarded with information, but we really understand little about our world. Aside from the tiny portion of space and time that we occupy throughout the day, our knowledge of the […]
Morals mean listening to your own heart and mind
In Shaun Duncan's letter in the March 24 Xpress["Mayor's Vote on Domestic-partner Benefits Respected Community's Conservatives"], Mr. Duncan writes, "I dread to see how far society's morals will have slid to [in the future.]" We feel that there is another way of seeing the changing morality of our country. In our view, morality is not […]
Health-care bill does little to curb costs
The high cost of health care is the primary problem with our current health-care system, and unfortunately the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act" does little to truly rein in these costs. With an unworkable individual mandate, tens of billions of dollars in new insurer fees and taxes, expansions of Medicaid and dependent age, tight […]

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Recruits Volunteers to Assist with Elk Program
Would you like to spend some time in the Cataloochee Valley, look after the elk and visitors, be mistaken for a park ranger, and wear a cool uniform?
Here comes the guide:
Sage. Emerald. Lime. Clover. Pine. Asparagus. These and thousands more verdant hues are beginning to creep along branches, hillsides and riverbanks, blanketing our mountains and bringing long-awaited spring to Western North Carolina. Looping skillfully towards glory
When Tartufi last performed in Asheville, the duo owned The Joli Rouge for an evening — by the time the band left the stage, the two musicians had converted a number of those present to hard-core fans. Tartufi are Lynne Angel and Brian Gorman. Despite their number, the sound and presence exceeds that of many […]
The Green Scene
[Editor's note: The massive coal-ash spill near Knoxville, Tenn., in December 2008 drew attention to the huge amounts of toxic wastes stored, with little regulation, at coal-burning power plants across (see The Green Scene, "One Lump or Two?" Jan. 14, 2009 Xpress). A report last fall that named Progress Energy's local dams potentially hazardous has […]
Artillery
Two years ago, while browsing an estate sale in Washington, D.C., local artist Becca Johnson came across the photo album of a woman named Dell Barnhart who was born in the early 1900s. Using the information she was given about this woman, Johnson began to piece together a narrative of her life. "I had limited […]
