The country roads cut through the mountains, winding along the rivers and next to farmers’ fields. This is the landscape of Mitchell and Yancey Counties, where the 84 artists participating in the Toe River Arts Council’s studio tour — held Friday-Sunday, June 2-4 — live and work.
For this year’s American Craft Week, organizers are highlighting emerging artists in Rising Stars, an online exhibition featuring 30 craftspeople under the age of 30. The Asheville Area Arts Council further develop the concept with its Best of WNC: Emerging Craft Artist Showcase.
The art of calligraphy takes center stage at a local event, on the campus of Warren Wilson College, from Saturday, June 25 to Sunday, July 2. There, approximately 275 participants will explore the art form.

Using Josef Albers’ Interlude concept as a model, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and the Media Arts Project will break from their regularly scheduled annual fundraiser, the {Re}Happening. In its place, Interlude, held in downtown Asheville, offers works by more than 30 artists over the event’s three weeks.
Not only were women the organizers of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, but they also made up a significant part of its membership. The works selected for Appalachian Innovators show a continuity of the female workforce over 70 years and include historical gems alongside contemporary works by Cynthia Bringle, Jane Peiser and others.
The intended narrative within the drawing remains ambiguous to the viewer, and that’s the way Kreh Mellick wants it. “I’ve given you a small set of things to look at, and then you get to create that story yourself. That’s what I love about books without words, that interaction between the artist and the author,” she says.
The exhibition, Private Domain, remains on display at S. Tucker Cooke Gallery, on the first floor of UNCA’s Owen Hall, through Friday, March 4.
One of the things that intrigues Garth Johnson about the artists represented in Recorded Matter: Ceramics in Motion, “is that there isn’t a tremendous obsession with where the art lies,” he says. Johnson curated the exhibit, which is on display at The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design through Saturday, May 21.
