AC-T: NC Dems push downgrading pot penalties

Here’s an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-Times article:

Democrats in the state House want to downgrade the possession of less than an ounce of marijuana to a civil infraction similar to a traffic ticket.

Simple marijuana possession is currently a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by a suspended sentence and a $200 fine.

Democrat Rep. Susan Fisher of Asheville is among the group of lawmakers backing the bill. …

Fifty-six percent of North Carolina voters believe the penalty for marijuana possession should entail only a fine, according to a Public Policy Polling survey of 611 voters released in March.
