Press release from the Asheville Police Department:
Asheville, NC (March 6, 2016): On March 5, 2016, at approximately 6:30 PM, the Asheville Police Department responded to what was reported as a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the parking lot of The Asheville Inn at 1 Acton Circle. Officers arrived to find that the victim had been transported to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the collision. The victim has been identified as Richard Jared Peters, 39, of Asheville.
The investigation revealed that the victim was struck by a green 2002 Toyota Highlander SUV, and that the driver of the SUV had fled the scene. The Toyota SUV may be displaying a 30-day temporary registration plate, and has a Miami Dolphins sticker in the top left corner of the rear window.
Investigators are continuing to work to develop leads into the case and will continue to do so until the suspect is located. If any member of the public has information concerning the incident, or knowledge that may lead to the location of the Toyota Highlander SUV, they are encouraged to contact the Asheville Police Department at 828-252-1110 or Buncombe County Crime Stoppers at 828-255-5050. Citizens should use caution if the vehicle is encountered.
