“One of the most common questions I’m asked is whether or not tiny homes are legal in our city or anywhere else around the country,” writes Laura LaVoie in a recent post introducting the Asheville Small Home Advocacy Committee . “Unfortunately, that isn’t a very easy question to answer”
LaVoie writes:
Asheville SHAC is a group of dedicated volunteers working together and with the city and Buncombe County to make micro homes a viable solution for affordable housing, urban density, and walkability of the city and surrounding areas.
We believe there may be two paths to tiny.
- Foundation homes which can be built as Accessory Dwelling Units, answer questions of density, and offer individuals an affordable way to live and work within the city limits.
- Homes on wheels which could be placed in a renovated mobile home park to improve the look and value of these abandoned areas within the city limits.
Asheville SHAC is just beginning discussions with the city government to answer some of the important questions surrounding the viability of tiny homes. We are also actively seeking individuals who are interested in starting a project and have the means to bring a development to the attention of the decision makers. We need to better understand the codes and zoning regulations as they apply to small houses. …
One of our primary missions is to use small houses to address the question of affordability in Asheville as it is currently one of the most expensive places to live in the United States. The very people who make up Asheville’s vibrant culture of artists, musicians, and individuals within the service industry are being priced out of homes in the city.
