From Buncombe County Schools
Press Release
Buncombe County Schools officials will be asking parents and staff to take a short survey to gauge preference regarding future make-up days for the remainder of the 2014-15 school year. The five question survey will be available from Monday, February 23, through Thursday, February, 26.
Already this year, there have been a total of five (5) lost days due to inclement weather system-wide. In addition, wintry weather closed Erwin District schools on November 18 to up its total to six (6) lost days. As a result of these closings, the 2014-15 Academic Calendar has been adjusted to include three (3) additional days to the school year (June 8, 9, and 10).
State calendar law requires 1025 hours of instruction for the school year. Currently our schools are on track to exceed the 1025 instructional hours. In order to accommodate the remaining two (2) system-wide days lost due to inclement weather, the 2014-15 Academic Calendar will be reduced from 182 days to 180 days. BCS will be required to make-up any additional days that are missed.
No determination has been made regarding the additional make-up day for Erwin District schools. The survey will be accessible via two (2) platforms.
- Internet- An online survey will be available on the BCS homepage and every school’s homepage;
- Phone- A one-time, automated phone survey will be conducted beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night (February 24). This School Messenger phone survey will contact all parents and staff whohave previously provided a phone number to their school/department.The five questions will gauge preferences for future make-up days, if necessary. The make-up options will include attending school: a) on Saturday; b) during Spring Break; c) on the April 6 optional teacher workday; d) on Memorial Day (May 25); or e) by extending the school year to June 11.
