The North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division released their January 2015 report, including information about late 2014 unemployment rates. At 3.8 percent unemployment, Buncombe County was among the state’s lowest rates.
Neighboring counties had unemployment rates as follows:
Madison — 4.4 percent
Haywood — 4.6 percent
Transylvania — 5.4 percent
Jackson — 4.5 percent
Henderson — 4 percent
Rutherford — 7 percent
McDowell — 5.7 percent
Yancey — 5.6 percent
Among North Carolina’s 100 counties, 20 counties’ rates increased from the previous month, 72 counties’ rates decreased from the previous month and 8 counties’ unemployment figure remained constant. Overall, the state unemployment rate was 5.3 percent for November 2014.
Regular unemployment insurance benefits (not including extended benefits and federal additional compensation) for Asheville amounted to $759,314 for the month, from some 842 initial insurance claim transactions.
