Buncombe County schools are stretching federal dollars, using some reserve funds and relying on previous reductions in spending to help make up a budget shortfall created by expected decreases in state funding.
“We believe we can keep our workforce intact for this coming year,” said Mary Parker, chief financial officer for Buncombe County Schools.
The school board must submit a funding request to Buncombe County commissioners by May 15. Board members will be asked to authorize a preliminary budget for commissioners at their May meeting, but a final budget likely won’t be adopted until late fall. …
…Since 2008, the system has lost 139 positions, that includes 51 classroom teacher jobs, 11.5 elementary assistants, 15 custodians, 11 clerical positions, five central office positions and 20 technology positions.
