On September 7th, 2024 Asheville’s oldest and one of the largest Scouts BSA Units, Unit 4, hosts “Cub Scouts Rocket Day” as a recruitment and school-year kickoff event. Members of the public are invited to join with their families to build and shoot off rockets, and to learn about Scouting.
Western North Carolina’s Daniel Boone Council serves 14 counties hosting 72 Scout Units, including 31 Cub Scout Packs (elementary school aged) and 39 Scouts BSA Troops (6th grade and up.) Unit 4, the oldest in the region, is over 100 yrs old.
“Thanks to successful recruiting events, a plethora of exciting adventures and engaged parents and volunteers, the next hundred years of this group of Scouts looks very strong,” said Mark DeVerges, Pack 4 Assistant Cubmaster.
At the John B Lewis soccer fields’ huge parking area and lawn right next to ‘soccer field 4,’ On September 7 at 10 a.m., Pack 4 will host their annual Rocket Day for elementary school aged youth of all genders, including a paper plane competition, water rocket, air rocket, vinegar and baking powder rockets, and model rocket stations. Unit 4 supports middle school-aged youth through Troop 4.
“Nothing brings these kids together like a loud colorful rocket soaring high above them and we do so many fun events like this together throughout the year” said Adam Palmer, proud parent and former Cubmaster.
Over the last few years, the Unit 4 has grown to over 100 participating K-12th youths learning to embody the principles and characteristics of The Scout Law, “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”
Among a long list of Pack 4 events planned this year are biking the Virginia Creeper Trail, gem mining, an overnight visit to an aircraft carrier, the USS Yorktown in Charleston, camping in Cataloochee and elk viewing, and of course the most anticipated annual event for every scout, the Pinewood Derby; when Scouts race their homemade derby cars for the ultimate reward of being the year’s champion!
“We feel as though we have found a ‘special sauce’ for running a strong and growing Unit. Among many reasons, the Pack and Troop meet at the same location and time. This makes it super easy for families with kids in both the Pack and the Troop,” says Clark Glenn, Troop 4 Packmaster.
