Press release from Jackson County Chamber of Commerce:
The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce has postponed the holiday fireworks planned for Friday, Dec. 1 due to the current drought situation.
After discussions with Chief Mike Beck of the Sylva Fire Department, my office cannot issue the permit for fireworks for downtown Sylva this Friday night, December 1,” said Jackson County Director of Permitting and Code Enforcement Tony Elders. “Conditions at this point remain too dangerous for the show to be permitted and conducted safely“
Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Donaldson said the chamber will reschedule the fireworks for 2024.
“We will still try to have the holiday concert on the front porch of the chamber at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting,” she said. “We plan to have free hot chocolate and vendors. If we end up needing to cancel the concert event due to weather, we’ll share that information via a press release, as well as on our social media pages and website.”
The hour-long concert will feature local favorites Terri Lynn Queen and Scott Baker performing holiday classics from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
At this point, the Town of Sylva’s tree lighting will occur as planned at 6 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 1, as will the Christmas Parade on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m.
The tree lighting is still scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m., however, if the amount of rain causes safety issues, we may reconsider closer to the date,” said Town of Sylva Economic Development Director Bernadette Peters. “The Christmas Parade is still scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3 at 3 p.m., rain or shine.“
