Join Buncombe County Parks & Recreation in celebrating Earth Day with community volunteering and family-friendly fun

Press release from Buncombe County:

Commemorate Earth Day on April 20, 2024, with a series of activities at various Buncombe County Parks & Recreation locations. Community members, students, schools, clubs, organizations, and businesses eager to lend a hand in fostering local biodiversity, parks beautification efforts, and Earth Day-themed activities are encouraged to attend and participate.

From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to help create a vibrant pollinator garden developed in collaboration with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Located at the Buncombe County Sports Park, the pollinator garden will serve as a vital sanctuary for essential species like bees and butterflies and will support local ecosystems by providing essential habitats and nourishment.

Additionally, groups looking to contribute to local environmental stewardship and beautification efforts are encouraged to volunteer at Lake Julian Park to assist with landscaping efforts. Volunteers will be provided with materials such as gloves, loppers, shovels, shears, watering cans, seedlings, bulbs, shrubs, flowers, and safety vests. Volunteer registration for the park cleanups and landscaping is available here.

In addition to the park cleanup and pollinator garden landscaping, there will be an Earth Day Fair taking place on April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Buncombe County Sports Park. The fair will feature environmental education workshops, free eco-crafting, bird house and feeder building activities, a greenhouse effect activity, and more. Limited supplies are available, and admission is free with no registration required. For additional information, please email conner.white@buncombecounty.org or call (828) 250-4260.
