From Just Us For All
The Asheville, NC, activist group, Just Us for All, has organized an event to focus the community on gender identity and sexual orientation pertaining to anyone that is a part of or an ally to the queer community.
Just Us For All maintains similar goals in the coming year to ones past such as street safety, LGBTQIA awareness demonstrations, gaining gender neutral restrooms, reaching out to queers of color as well as other underrepresented groups of the LGBTQIA community and queer sensitivity training. Just Us For All’s primary purpose is to become a 501 C3 nonprofit organization. These goals require financial support and Just Us For All have organized a fundraiser called “How We Identify” on February 22, 2013 at 8pm. This is Just Us For All’s third annual art+words event, celebrating the spectrums of queer identity.
Through this art show JUFA hopes to illuminate identities and experiences that may otherwise be ignored under the “queer” umbrella term, and by providing a platform for these voices we can come to a greater understanding of others. Stop by and enjoy the visual art and spoken words of queer and allied individuals in the Asheville area during a night of performance, community, and expression. Through education and sharing, Just Us For All can affirm differences and appreciate perspectives within the queer community.
Opening up the evening with a small reception with catering by local pastry chef (and JUFA member) Katie B.Good, artworks created by local artists will be available for viewing at 8pm. Toyboat’s bar will be open to patrons, with jams provided by DJ Waltz. From 9:30-11pm spoken word performances (and a burlesque act!) will take place. Local heart throb, show stopper, drag goddess, and talented Chartreuse will be the emcee. Kangarot will be closing the night with their original music, best described as industrial/dark electro nu wave wizard rock. (http://kangarot.bandcamp.com/ )
“I believe this will be our most informative and inclusive How We Identify event to date. We don’t only expect allies to walk away learning new things about the queer community but people within our community should be enlightened as well.” said Just Us For All President and Founder Sam “Basil” Soper.
The occasion will be held at Toyboat Toyboat:
