Lizzie Rogers named Asheville City Schools’ 2023 teacher of the year

Press release from Asheville City Schools:

Asheville City Schools is proud to announce that Lizzie Rogers has been named the district’s 2024 teacher of the year. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in teaching and the significant impact that educators have on the lives of their students.

Currently an Asheville High School social studies teacher, Rogers was named the ACS Teacher of the Year during a surprise announcement surrounded by her students and colleagues this morning. The reveal’s timing is extra special, as it coincides with Asheville City Schools’ Staff Appreciation Week.

“I hope you’re not expecting a speech because I’m just so overwhelmed,” said Lizzie Rogers.

Rogers has been a part of the #CougarFamily since 2001 and has been a teacher since 1995. She has demonstrated a strong commitment to student success. She is highly respected by students, colleagues, parents, and caregivers alike for her dedication to teaching and her ability to inspire and motivate students.

“We are thrilled to honor Lizzie Rogers as the Asheville City Schools 2023 Teacher of the Year,” said Dr. Jim Causby, Asheville City Schools interim superintendent. “Her dedication and hard work have made a significant impact on the lives of many students, and she is truly deserving of this recognition.”

Rogers is a National Board certified teacher. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Davidson College and a Master of Arts degree in history from the University of Charleston.

“I posted on Facebook the other day asking for former students to tell me what they’re doing with their lives, and they’re just doing amazing things. They are truly out there saving the world. That’s why I do it, I’m just so proud of all of my students,” said Rogers.

As Asheville City Schools’ Teacher of the Year, Rogers will now be invited to participate in a regional interview process. Nine regional finalists will be selected amongst North Carolina’s 94,000+ classroom teachers.

From the nine, the state’s teacher of the year will be chosen by a committee of professional educators as well as business and community leaders.  The announcement for the North Carolina 2024 Teacher of the Year will be made in April 2024.

If selected as the state teacher of the year, she will spend the 2024-2025 school year traveling across North Carolina as an ambassador for the teaching profession.
