MLK Association of Asheville And Buncombe County celebrates the legacy Of Rosa Parks

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County’s Community Outreach Providing Empowerment (COPE) programs committee annually selects recipients of its Rosa Parks Award.

This award honors women in our community who have:

• Fostered a culture of inclusion in the Asheville community.

• Worked to achieve a just society for the disadvantaged.

• Exemplified a nonviolent philosophy in pursuit of a better life for non-majority people.

• Inspired direct action in the cause of social justice.

Our 2022 Rosa Parks Award honorees are:

Ms. Kathey Avery is founder and owner of Avery Health – Education and Consulting who has been relentless in her efforts to combat COVID-19 in our community by educating the public about the virus and the benefits of getting vaccinated.

Ms. Sophie Dixon is a leader in the Shiloh community, has worked tirelessly to uplift the community through youth mentorship, food sustainability projects, and enhancing community relations.

Ms. Antanette Mosley is a member of the Asheville City Council who has been a force in our community for improving affordable housing opportunities, supporting Black businesses, and eliminating the racial opportunity gap in our schools.

Dr. Tiece Ruffin is director of Africana Studies and professor of Africana Studies & Education at UNC-A who works to improve public education in NC by being a champion for justice, equity, and inclusion for our community’s diverse students.

Over the next four weeks, two in February (Black History month) and two in March (Women’s History month) we will spotlight one of these women each week by showing their acceptance speech video on the Associations YouTube page MLK Asheville.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County celebrates and thanks our 2022 Rosa Parks Award honorees for their leadership and inspiring service to our community.
