From My Daddy Taught Me That
Press release
The “My Daddy Taught Me That: An Original Documentary” premiere screening and fundraising event will be hosted Thursday, November 19th at Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. located on 675 Merrimon Ave. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at: http://mdtmtdocumentaryscreening.eventbrite.com/.
The screening is also MDTMT’s first fundraising event. Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. donated the space for the venue. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to support the organization’s after-school program at Pisgah View Apartments.
The program serves male youth ages 12-19. Children in the program participate in weekly discussion groups and bond with volunteer mentors during community meals, which are similar to family dinners. Empowering, educating, and supporting young males with developing into righteous, respectable, and responsible men are the main goals of MDTMT.
Inspired by his father, the late Bennie Lake, and his experience as a social worker Keynon Lake founded the My Daddy Taught Me That (MDTMT) non-profit organization. The documentary focuses on Lake’s childhood in Asheville and brings awareness to the issues of high school dropout and child poverty rates affecting youth, especially minority boys, in Buncombe County. The documentary is directed and produced by indie film maker Quavas Hart, owner of I’m So First Productions.
Lake is currently a social worker with Buncombe County Health and Human Services. He’s served as a Child Protective Services Social Worker III and most recently as a Community Service Navigator and Prevention Social Worker. He is also a dynamic public speaker who trains community members and educators on implementing strategies to engage young males academically and on how to develop youth mentoring programs.
