With state legislators are gathering in Raleigh for the opening of the session next week, the N.C. Press Association is urging its member newspapers to voice their support for Rep. Marilyn Avila’s public notices bill. Avila’s bill is reported to be identical to HB723 which was introduced in the last session.
Avila’s bill will be introduced on Day one of the session, according to Press Association’s member services director, Laura Nakoneczny.
According to the association, the Avila bill offers a statewide compromise for the dissemination of public notices. While retaining the longtstanding legal requirement that government agencies post legal notices in newspapers, the bill provides local governments discounts on notices that are required to run more than once, and provides free posting of these notices online through heavily trafficked newspaper websites.
Information on HB723 can be found here.
