The Asheville History Center is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition: “Bartram’s Journey; The 1775 Journey of William Bartram to Western North Carolina.”

The exhibition will open on Friday, June 12 during extended museum hours at the Smith-McDowell House, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
General admission to the Asheville History Center on this date ($9) includes a complimentary ticket to an evening reception and an introductory presentation by special guest, Brent Martin, the Southern Appalachian Director of The Wilderness Society from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Ferguson Auditorium in the A-B Tech campus.Standalone tickets purchased at Ferguson will be $10. All events are free for members of the Asheville History Center.
The exhibition will examine Bartram’s expedition during which he collected plant specimens, created illustrations of local flora and fauna, and interacted with the Cherokee Indians. These experiences were related in his late 1780s book “Travels Through North and South Carolina, East and West Florida . . . Containing An Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions.”The exhibition will also include artwork inspired by nature by Asheville area artists as well as native mammals prepared by local taxidermists.
