Summer is the time to show some skin and for some of us, henna — a natural dye used to decorate the surface of the skin for up to 3 weeks — is a a less permanent and painful way to decorate that skin than a regular tattoo.
Starting this week Julie Schantz, the owner/creator of Asheville Henna, will be offering professional henna tattoos to locals and tourists alike out of her booth at Woolworth Walk (25 Haywood St.) in downtown Asheville.
“Whether you are celebrating a birthday, about to get married, or just want to try out a design before committing to a permanent tattoo, summer is the perfect time of year to show off your henna,” says Schantz.
Appointment hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and Fridays, 12-4 p.m. Saturdays are ‘walk-ins only’, from 12-4 p.m., so get there early, advises Schantz.
Julie specializes in traditional henna tattoos on hands and feet, but also adorns pregnant bellies, arms, legs, shoulders, backs and bald heads, also known as ‘henna crowns’ — typically for people who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.
Prices depend on the size, detail and complexity of the design, but there is a $10 minimum.
Schantz also paints candles, rocks, notecards, tambourines and more, using henna, as well as acrylic paint and markers. Her art will also be on display (and available to purchase) at her booth.
