Senator Terry Van Duyn to host community education forum

Press release from Senator Terry Van Duyn’s office:

Asheville, N.C. – State Senator Terry Van Duyn (Dem-Buncombe) will host a community forum from 6-8 p.m. November 9 at Asheville High School auditorium, 419 McDowell Street, to discuss the N.C. state of education and share insights from her seat in the state legislature. This is free and open to the public.

“If our children are to compete for the good paying jobs of the future, they will need a world class education,” said Van Duyn. “But, nationally, we’re ranked 42nd in per-pupil spending and have just been ranked by Wallet Hub as the second to worst state in the country for teachers. That makes it very hard to keep well-trained, motivated teachers on the job when the General Assembly treats public education with so little respect.”

Guest panelist will also include Rep. Brian Turner (Dem-Buncombe); Buncombe County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin; Asheville City School Superintendent Dr. Pamela Baldwin; and Erwin High’s Brian Gonzales, 2015 Buncombe County Teacher of the Year.

The format of the panel will include brief introductions by the panel members followed by a series of questions regarding the state of education in North Carolina.  Members of the audience may submit questions to the panel through social media before and during the event via Facebook and Twitter by using the hashtag #EdForum2015. The Panel will also take live audience questions at the end of the event as time allows.
