Press release from Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office:
“Let me start by saying thank you to our Buncombe County Commissioners and county management for the continued increases in salaries for our Detention Officers, Deputies and Administrative staff. They have invested in our career ladder pay system and understand that we are asking our staff to complete educational and training goals in order to move up the ladder of hourly pay,” says Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller.
The FY24 budget represents an 11 percent increase in salary and benefits for the Sheriff’s Office as a whole compared to FY23. For budgeting purposes, the cost centers are broken out as the Detention Center and Sheriff’s Office.
The Detention Center is funded at $24,155,882 with $17,389,126 of that being salaries and benefits for Detention Officers. Contracted services represent $6,515,744 million of the Detention budget, a more than $2.5 million increase over FY22 as the Sheriff’s Office continues to provide contracted medical services to our detainees significantly beyond what is required by North Carolina state statutes.
The Sheriff’s Office cost center budget increases from $24,590,640 in FY23 to $26,541,358 in FY24 with $24,231,502 of that total consisting of salaries and benefits.
