Press Release

Carolina Jews for Justice/West will present an educational program at 3:00 p.m. on February 8, 2015, at Congregation Beth HaTephila, featuring Professor Darin Waters of the UNC-Asheville History Department.  His topic will be,  “History and its Burdens: The place of African Americans in our collective historical memory.”

Dr. Waters will be joined by Deborah Miles, Executive Director of the UNC-Asheville Center for Diversity Education. The program will provide insight into a little-known era in the history of Western North Carolina and its importance to the Jewish population in our area. A question and answer period will follow.

“The Jewish people, long the victims themselves of oppression, discrimination, and even enslavement in Biblical times, have a special empathy for others who have suffered indignities and worse on account of their racial or ethnic identity,” says Frank Goldsmith, steering committee member of CJJ/West. “ We wish to honor those who participated in the struggle for equal rights for African-Americans in the Civil Rights Movement, and to remember the period in which African-Americans were bought and sold as property, even here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We invite the community to join us during February, traditionally designated as Black History Month, to learn more about this important period in Asheville history.”

The program is free and open to the public.  Congregation Beth HaTephila is located at 43 North Liberty Street, Asheville.
