Press release from UNC Asheville:
UNC Asheville Department of Mass Communication has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Kay Phillips Distinguished Service Award. This accolade, presented annually by the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA), recognizes those who exemplify unparalleled dedication to scholastic journalism statewide.
For nearly two decades, UNC Asheville has fostered a strong partnership with NCSMA by nurturing the talents of aspiring young journalists from across the state.
“This award is about recognizing the collective dedication and excellence displayed by teachers, advisers, and students in creating outstanding student media efforts year after year,” says Michael Gouge, senior lecturer in mass communication.
The recognition given to the UNC Asheville Mass Communication Department is a testament to UNC Asheville’s commitment to excellence and a celebration of the remarkable achievements of the advisors involved.
Gouge, who serves as the advisor for UNC Asheville’s student-led newspaper, The Blue Banner, was instrumental in creating an annual High School Media Day workshop for newspaper, broadcast, magazine, and yearbook students and teachers in Western North Carolina. From its start of 20 attendees, the workshop has grown under Gouge’s direction, attracting nearly 140 students in its latest chapter.
The workshops have proven to be influential experiences for participating student journalists, igniting their passion and prompting many to consider pursuing a career in the field. Reflecting on the impact of the workshops, Gouge shared, “Several college students majoring in mass communication have approached me to tell me about their experience attending the high school workshop at UNCA years ago, which ultimately influenced their decision to enroll at our university.”
Established by the NCSMAA Executive Committee to commemorate those who have made significant contributions to scholastic journalism in North Carolina and/or NCSMA, the award pays tribute to Kay Phillips, former director of NCSMA. Recipients must have demonstrated at least five years of exceptional service to scholastic journalism. This year, the Appalachian State University Department of Communication, led by Allison Bennett Dyche, also received the award.
