United Way of Asheville: #GivingTuesday in WNC

How to participate in #GivingTuesday and #GivingTuesdayWNC movements

From United Way of Asheville:

Local nonprofits want to ensure local news leaders know about an international movement called #GivingTuesday and let you know what is happening in WNC.

What is #GivingTuesday?

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and now, GivingTuesday. The idea: in a season of consumerism, it is important to create space for giving back. And one way to do this is promote the organizations who are working to build community and connecting people who care, with tangible ways to help: by raising funds, encouraging volunteerism, promoting advocacy… any number of ways to help any number of efforts.

#GivingTuesday really is a fantastic opportunity to promote greater good during the Thanksgiving season.

What is happening locally and how can you, as news leaders, learn more and spread the word?
· #GivingTuesday is December 3, 2013
· Many local agencies have signed up as a #GivingTuesday partner. You can review the lists of partners here but you should know that this part of the site is somewhat awkward and slow.

Girls On The Run WNC is maintaining a page on their web site to host links to what other agencies are doing – you can visit that page here. This list will grow as more agencies let us know about their efforts.

· We have encouraged area nonprofits to include #GivingTuesday and #GivingTuesday on all Facebook, Twitter and other social media promotions. Local media can check out the local happening as well as international ones by viewing those feeds.

· We are all encouraging supporters to share why they support their favorite causes and nonprofit organizations – they will also include hashtags in their posts and we are hoping they’ll get creative with all the ways to encourage giving to nonprofits this holiday season.

o We are still in need of gifts for middle school youth. People interested in GIVING can drop gifts off at United Way – 50 S. French Broad Avenue up until mid day on December 3. Here is a list of items needed.
