WCU to screen female education documentary Feb. 13

Press Release

Western Carolina University

“Girl Rising,” a feature film inspired by the true stories of nine girls from nine countries, will be screened at Western Carolina University in the theater of A.K. Hinds University Center at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13.

Narrated by movie stars including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez, the film was created to convey the importance of investing in the futures of female children and ways to end violence and support global change as it relates to global poverty, class and gender.

A brief presentation centered on how to be an advocate for these issues and get involved in the movement to empower women and girls will follow the screening.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of Intercultural Affairs and the Department of Philosophy and Religion.

For more information, contact Sarah Carter, associate director for resource services for intercultural affairs, at sacarter@wcu.edu, or John Whitmire, associate professor and head of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, at jwhitmire@wcu.edu.
