WLOS: Mom’s claim son died was a scam

Investigators say a fundraising effort in Madison County was all a fake. According to the sheriff, a woman falsely told everyone her son died, according to reports by WLOS.

The  sheriff’s department says it received complaints that helped untangle a web of lies. Donnie Hjeresa faces two counts of obtaining money by false pretense.

She told coworkers at Blue Ridge Group Homes that her son died in a car accident in Florida. That sparked a fundraising effort, including a spaghetti lunch. After hundreds of dollars raised, Sheriff Buddy Harwood says it became clear her son is not dead.

“Pretty low to say your sons been killed and your ex husband is in a coma, that’s sorry individual,” said Sheriff Buddy Harwood.
