Press release from the N.C. Department of Agriculture:
The Western N.C. Farmers Market has been awarded a $380,000 grant from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority.
The market will use the grant to help pay for a planned renovation of the retail Market Shops building, which is designed to encourage increased visitation, particularly during winter months.
“The WNC Farmers Market has been a popular Asheville tourist site for nearly 40 years,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With the support of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, we will be able to make improvements so that the market can continue to be a destination for tourists and locals alike.”
The TDA awarded the grant from the Tourism Product Development Fund. The fund provides financial assistance for major tourism projects to substantially increase patronage of lodging facilities in Buncombe County.
Renovation of the Market Shops is among the projects included in the farmers market’s master plan, released last year. The market is located at 570 Brevard Road.
