News release from NC DOT:
Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will be performing work on the tunnel on U.S.25/McDowell Street under Victoria Road next to the Mission Hospital campus in Asheville starting Wednesday, June 19. During the work, McDowell Street will be closed between Choctaw Street and Doctors Drive.
Crews will be making repairs to the inside of the tunnel, including fixing cracks, laying an anti-graffiti coating and improving lighting. A new stone veneer will also be applied to the outside of the tunnel.
All work will take place at night between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. The project contract permits the contractor to work on both weekdays and weekends. Work is expected to be completed by winter of 2014.
During the project, motorists traveling north on U.S. 25/McDowell Street should use the following signed detour:
Right on Doctors Drive, left on Biltmore Avenue then left on Choctaw Street to return to McDowell Street.
Southbound motorists on U.S. 25/McDowell Street should follow the same route in reverse.
The $1.5 million project contract was awarded to R.E. Burns and Sons Inc. of Statesville.NCDOT reminds motorists to stay alert, watch signs for construction information and obey the posted speed limit.
