Despite having garnered reviews that could—charitably—be called tepid, I approached Till Human Voices Wake Us (2002) with some hopefulness, because I like ghost stories and I like Guy Pearce and Helena Bonham Carter. Unfortunately, the reviews were pretty much on the money. What we have is one really nice-looking movie that almost completely submerges its slim—and rather unsurprising—narrative in its own artiness. When the film was originally released in Australia, it had a straightforward linear narrative, but was recut for the U.S. market into its current jumbled-up narrative, which may or may not be in its favor. In either case, it’s still a predictable ghost story built on a childhood romance/tragedy. It’s sincerely played and beautifully photographed, but largely lacking in dramatic tension.
