Tough Guys

Movie Information

In Brief: As much as the idea of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas reteaming for a buddy comedy might appeal to the film historian in me, Tough Guys (1986) really isn't a film that should have been introduced into the cinematic record. It's not that it's necessarily bad, it's just not as good as it could have or should have been, given the talent of its leads. Director Jeff Kanew, possibly best-known for Revenge of the Nerds (1984), seems too enamored of his stars to bother developing relatable character arcs for them, and his sense of comedic timing seems to have largely abandoned him. This all results in a comedy as predictable as it is forgettable, more of an interesting aside in the careers of two of Hollywood's golden-era greats than a film that deserves to be seen on its own merits.
