Get into it: Upcoming classes on natural art

• Kelley Adair will lead “Make Natural Paints,” a hand-on course on making paints with various natural materials. Held at The Urban Art Retreat and Studio on Saturday, June 20, from noon-2pm. Cost: $30.

Adair will also teach a class on interior natural paints on Thursday, July 23, from 6- 9 p.m. at The ARCH. Cost: $40.

The Firefly Gathering will present a three-hour class on natural dyes and ongoing demonstrations led by various artists from Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28.

Jacqueline Maloney will be teaching a class at The Firefly Gathering called “Cultivating Wonder,” on Friday, June 26th and Saturday, June 27th. The class, describes Maloney, is about “creating and living in one’s personal mythology.”

Maloney’s work is currently on display at HomeGrown and Herbiary. Info: jacquelinekmaloney.blogspot.com.

• Nick Neddo will be teaching a three-day workshop on art and wildcrafting at a post-Firefly Gathering Intensive. “In this intensive you will make charcoal drawing sticks, paint from local stones, paint brushes from plant and animal fibers, pens from feathers and sticks, inks from soot (among other things) and crayons from beeswax and your new pigments,” states the artist on his Facebook page. Cost: $230. Info: nickneddo.com.

• Environmental fiber and clay installation artist Neil Goss will teach a class on indigo dyeing at Villagers on Sunday, June 28, from 5-9 p.m. Cost: $35.

Goss will also create an art-installation project (site to be determined) as part of “East to West Environmental Art Tour.” The Totem installation, featuring hand-dyed backstrap weaving, will be open for public participation.

“The hope and intention is that people will come together around the project and be introduced to the backstrap weave and create art together,” Gross says. “It stays until the earth fully-consumes [it]. It’s about embracing the cycles of life. Sometimes it’s not beautiful. And yet, [bio]degrading is a natural process, and that is beauty.”

Wild Abundance will present a “plant walk, harvest, dye-straviganza” on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10am-4pm.. Cost: $65-100 sliding scale + $15 materials fee.

Intro to Natural Dyes will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10 at A-B Tech BioNetwork, from 6-9 p.m.
