Democratizing the Economy through Cooperatives, the third program for Co-creating the New Economy in WNC, will be held on Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m., in the community room of EarthFare (Westgate). The topic will be: .
A very effective way to create more stable, equitable and prosperous economies is through the development of cooperatives, say organizers. These private enterprises are owned collectively by their members, who are rooted in the local community. Cooperatives not only ensure that all of their members receive ample compensation for their work and resources, while promoting the sustainable development of their communities.
Thomas Beckett, founder of Ownership Appalachia and co-executive director of Carolina Common Enterprise, will be the guest speaker May 8. He will share his knowledge and experiences regarding cooperative development on the national, regional and local level. Following his presentation, attendees will apply open-space technology to focus on three to four specific projects that they’re interested in working on. By applying individual and collective energies to these projects, the group hopes to advance the development of a new economy in WNC.
