Medford responds

Mountain Xpress: “Thank you for calling back. The reason I called you is that we’re putting together a story that involves an incident that occurred on Oct. 1.”

Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford: “I’m familiar with it, yes.”

Xpress: “Right. And we have witnesses and confirmation by the SBI [State Bureau of Investigation] that it involved your son.”

Medford: “Sheriffs want to do an investigation — if there’s an investigation to do.”

Xpress: “Has there been an arrest in the case?”

Medford: “For what?”

Xpress: “There was an allegation of domestic violence.”

Medford: “Well, that would be up to the SBI, now, right?”

Xpress: “I believe …”

Medford: “Now, don’t pick on my son, OK?”

Xpress: “I’m not attempting to pick on your son.”

Medford: “Now listen to me, all right? Now, do your story, OK? But now, you’re gonna have enough problems coming out of Morganton [the site of Broughton State Hospital, where the alleged victim was committed] that I don’t have to cause you any, OK? Now, I’ll talk to you later, son.” (Hangs up.)
