Let kids speak for themselves. That’s the idea that unfolds in this special For Kids, By Kids edition. We asked teachers, parents and school leaders to help us learn what’s on the minds and in the hearts of our young residents — and we received more than 200 submissions, from art to poetry. The cover design was based on a submission from India Jade Nelle (her original shown here).
In these pages, we offer a mere sampling of the many charming and thoughtful stories, poems, essays, photos and art produced by Asheville and Buncombe kids. Follow them on a journey through the ages, if you will, from kindergarten to high school.
And look for the kids trail throughout this issue — kids’ opinions on assigned seats, a news story on media literacy in education, kids in the garden, mindfulness practices for children in the Wellness section, kids and food, and a dash of kid-friendly entertainment. Look online too: We’ll feature as many of the other submissions as we can, at mountainx.com/kids.
So come along, and look at our world through a kid’s eyes. Over the next few days, we’ll feature “kid stuff” every day.
