Speaking for the people

Thank goodness for organizations that keep democracy in check. The Canary Coalition and Mountain Voices Alliance are truly speaking for the people as they move toward legal action to oppose the Woodfin power plant. It is clear from the letters, public comments and overwhelming outrage about the plant that the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners was not speaking for the people.

All across the country, people have finally accepted that human action is contributing to global warming and are taking steps to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Yet just outside of the supposedly progressive city of Asheville, another very dirty power plant is about to be built that will have a significant negative impact on your health, the health of our environment and the health of our regional economy. Expect even higher health-care costs with increased rates of respiratory illnesses and heart disease. And more smog-clogged vistas and towering smokestacks belching pollution will not help tourism, either.

If you want to do something to oppose this plant, join forces with The Canary Coalition or Mountain Voices Alliance. Volunteer, donate, or show your support. They need your help to win this battle: www.canarycoalition.org or www.mvalliance.net.
