Turns out Asheville Vice Mayor Brownie Newman isn’t bowing out of local politics. While the two-term Asheville City Council member’s last official day in office is tomorrow, he has his sights set on a seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, and announced a run this afternoon.

Contaminated former CTS site moves closer to condemnation
A recent bid by residents near the contaminated former CTS of Asheville plant on Mills Gap Road to have the property condemned has taken a step forward. A Buncombe County inspection from last week reveals numerous holes in the roof, missing doors and window glass, and related damage that “doesn’t seem feasible to repair.”

The state House of Representatives passed Republican Rep. Tim Moffitt‘s bill to expand the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners from five to seven members and mandate district representation in place of the current at-large elections. The bill would institute this change without a local referendum.
