No place to go: Foster care system can’t keep pace with kids in need
As of March 31, there were 2,386 kids in foster care in the 28 western counties. While innovative agencies and evolving state standards are making strides in streamlining the system and reuniting families, the available resources can’t keep up with the growing numbers of children needing foster care.

Update: Petition against Bell’s Brewery collects 1,200 signatures in 15 hours
Innovation Brewing in Sylva reveals its legal fight over conflicting language with a much bigger company — Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The small Sylva brewer received nationwide support following the dispute, sparking both a petition and a GoFundMe page for the microbrewery’s legal fees. The petition has already reached 3,500 signatures.

Asheville abortion clinic would be only one in NC to meet new restrictions
If the North Carolina General Assembly passes a bill that would change the state’s requirements for abortion clinics, Asheville’s FemCare would be the only clinic in the state able to meet the proposed guidelines.
Health officials: Measles outbreak reported in NC
With eight cases of the measles confirmed to date, officials from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services announced they are working with local health departments to investigate and control an outbreak. Though nothing can get rid of a measles infection, health officials say it can be prevented by the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.
