Transitioning from the mission-driven military to ordinary civilian life is often when vets slip into unemployment, depression or homelessness. But two farming programs in WNC are working to give veterans a connection to the land, to their community and to a sense of purpose that so many seek.
Ben’s Tune Up and Veterans Helping Veterans WNC have partnered to present “Karaoke 4 a Cause,” a singing competition featuring Rolling Stones’ songs. Competitors will be judged by a panel of local celebrities and will be competing for a grand prize of a $500 recording session at Echo Mountain Recording Studio.
Veterans Helping Veterans of Western North Carolina is a new organization created to help local veterans successfully reintegrate into civilian life. Matt Shepley said he founded the group because he recognized the need to prevent veterans’ homelessness and address issues with post-traumatic stress disorder, rather than waiting for veterans who require care to become homeless.
