Local ski areas are reporting great conditions and it looks like more snow is on the way, with Ray’s Weather Center predicting another 6 to12 inches for the highest peaks over the next couple of days. On January, 10, we went up to Wolf Ridge Ski Resort in Madison County and encountered powder that’s more typical of the Rockies than the Southern Appalachians. Here’s a short video of what we found.

In this week’s WNC Wellness review: North Carolina’s new mental-health program launches; a case study of Chinese herbs for flu; first TIF surgery in NC performed at Pardee; flu activity in Asheville on the rise.
Milquetoast Xpress parody site launches
There’s a certain kind of flattery associated with being the subject of a parody. In this modern age, it may be the best indication that you’ve finally “made it.” After all, for something to be worth parodying, it has to be relevant enough for other people to get the joke. If the new Milquetoast Xpress parody site is any indication, we’ve finally joined the big leagues of local media.
Snow brings great sledding conditions to Asheville parks

The Beat: Shuler steps up; Nesbitt steps down
A look at what’s been making headlines: Rep. Heath Shuler concluded his bid for speaker of the House last week, and controversial Buncombe GOP Chair Chad Nesbitt bowed out of a second term. Also, snowy weather continued to blanket WNC.
Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Late Night Musings on a Few Movies
This Screening Room is something of an experiment. It’s the result of me having started keeping a not-entirely-comprehensive diary of movies I’ve watched that I didn’t have to review in some fashion—and which I think it reasonably improbable I’ll ever have occasion to review. The results are more reactions than reviews, but I thought they might be of some interest. They might ultimately be of some referential value, too, if someone in the technical department of the paper can come up with some method of cataloguing them in a separate archive alphabetically—and if I keep doing them. In any case, here are my short reviews on ten movies—mustered in alphabetical order.
Busk Break: Andrew Dwyer and Davey Bar-Shimon perform “Magic Kalyuka Monkey Man”
There are few places in the world where one can casually cross paths with a duo performing original works on didgeridoo and kalyuka/overtone flute. We’re very fortunate that Asheville is one of them. Here we have Andrew Dwyer (on kalyuka) and Davey Bar-Shimon (on didgeridoo) playing their original tune “Magic Kalyuka Monkey Man” near Urban Outfitters on Haywood Street.
Edgy Mama: Getting your mojo back
It’s a new year, and I’m guessing most of us have made a resolution or two. So now, it’s time to pave the way to hell with them (to paraphrase Mark Twain). In my lifelong experience as a female, I’ve noticed that most of my resolutions (and those of my friends with ovaries) tend to […]

Too much to do on January 15!
Even with the Abigail Washburn show at the Grey Eagle postponed (she was supposed to play Asheville on Saturday, Jan. 15, but landed a Prairie Home Companion gig instead — can’t begrudge her that!), there’s still too much to do on this particular Saturday. Unless you have super powers you’ll never fit it all in. (Still, it’s worth a try…)
Busk Break: Jason Brown performs “Deep Elem Blues”
Hendersonville-based musician and visual artist Jason Brown performs his version of the traditional tune “Deep Elem Blues” on a late, cold night on Main Street in downtown Hendersonville.
