Victor Giancola, owner of La Caterina Trattoria in Asheville, has ventured southward with his newest restaurant. He partnered with chef Joseph Lewis to open Potenza in Hendersonville earlier this summer. Giancola told the Times-News that since the town provided most of La Caterina’s best customers, he jumped at the opportunity to move into the 111 S. Main St. spot vacated by the Gypsy Cab Company. Potenza features a simplified version of La Caterina’s southern-Italian menu, and strives to use local and organic ingredients. The restaurant is open every day but Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. For reservations, call 698-5598.
Asheville is also getting a new addition to its already-crowded Italian restaurant lineup with the opening of Sugo this month. Damien and Lindsay Cavicchi, former owners of Clingman Ave Coffee and Catering, have spent much of the summer transforming the 90 Patton Ave. space formerly occupied by the Left Bank. According to the Cavicchis, the restaurant will feature homemade pastas, sausage and salami. To learn more, visit the eatery’s very handsome new Web site at www.sugoasheville.com or call 251-5552.
If you scream for rhubarb ice cream—or at least ice cream with homemade rhubarb topping—scurry over to Hendersonville on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Eleventh Annual Ice Cream Festival takes place at First Congregational United Church of Christ, on the corner of West Fifth Avenue and White Pine Drive. Cones cost $1; sundaes, topped with the aforementioned rhubarb, fudge, strawberry or butterscotch topping, are $2. Call 692-8630 for more information.
