Veggies and meaties may sometimes butt heads here, but Asheville still catches the favor of high profile animal-rights supporters.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has named Early Girl Eatery Restaurant of the Month on its VegCooking.com Web site. The write-up highlights the menu’s tofu scramble and bean burger with eggplant spread, as well as the restaurant’s use of locally grown produce, but shies away from mentioning the meat items like the fried green tomato BLT or the catfish po-boy.

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.
We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
I am a vegetarian who occasionally eats fish. My rule of thumb: I won’t eat what I am not willing to kill. PETA did the right thing by embracing Early Girl. They may play mortician to a few animal body part meals, but at least they are trying to be moral. I say celebrate small victories
