Small Bites

Westville Pub in West Asheville is turning 6, and its customers are getting the birthday gifts. A customer-appreciation raffle will run all next week, with the celebration culminating at a Saturday, April 19, party featuring Ten Toes Up.

The Admiral, also in West Asheville, has added another meal to its repertoire, serving Sunday brunch on the patio it recently carved out of its parking lot. Like the dinner menu, the morning bill of fare is subject to frequent change, but “there are vegan and carnivorous offerings, and great bar drinks after noon,” co-owner Drew Wallace says. Brunch is available every Sunday from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. For more information, call 252-2541.

Eating locally is good for the earth, good for the economy and—according to the Western Dietetic Association—good for your health. The organization recently partnered with the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project for a month-long program designed to familiarize elementary-school students with the nutritional benefits of North Carolina-grown vegetables. More than 20 workshops were scheduled during “31 Days of Nutrition,” including a carrot-and-radish sampling session at Emma Elementary and a pasta-making class at Vance Elementary.  Volunteer instructor Denise Barratt, who supplied students with local spinach, garlic and cheese for the dish, was pleased with the results: “I was encouraged to see the kids get excited,” she said in a release.
