Texas progressive Hightower returns

Progressive populist Jim Hightower, whose Web-site wisdom states, “Even the smallest dog can lift its leg on the tallest building,” will visit Asheville on Thursday, April 17, for an event benefitting Common Cause North Carolina.

Hightower, twice elected Texas Agriculture Commissioner, has since become a best-selling author and national radio commentator. He’s on the road promoting his latest answer to how progressives can create a better democracy — the theme of his latest book, Swim Against the Current: Even a Dead Fish Can Go with the Flow (John Wily & Sons, Inc., 2008). North Carolina’s reform community is one of the success stories Hightower features in the new book for “fighting big money politics,” and proceeds from the evening go to Common Cause to support such work.

The event takes place at First Congregational United Church of Christ in downtown Asheville. There will be a 7 p.m. public event with Hightower ($10 adults/$5 students) as well as a private reception and book-signing immediately following ($50 for the event and reception).
