Xpress writer snags reporting award and fellowship

Mountain Xpress contributing editor Rebecca Bowe covers “The Green Scene” — and much more — for our newspaper. Her reporting on environmental matters has become of mainstay of Xpress’ local journalism, and now two prestigious organizations have taken note of her work.

Last Saturday, at a ceremony in Atlanta, the Society of Professional Journalists issued its annual Green Eyeshade Awards, which recognize the best reporting in 11 Southern states. Bowe’s landmark exposé on groundwater contamination around the former CTS of Asheville factory — “Fail-Safe?” — caught the judges’ attention, and they awarded her second place for best investigative reporting by a nondaily-newspaper journalist for the article. (Earlier this year, the North Carolina Press Association granted an investigative-reporting award to Bowe for the same story).

And that’s not all: We recently received word that the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism at Michigan State University has granted a fellowship to Bowe to fund a special reporting project: In August, she’ll travel with 11 other environmental journalists to Alaska, where she’ll report on the American frontier of climate change.
