Into the Forums

Xpress Managing Editor Jon Elliston wants to know who you favor when it comes to local politicians, established and aspiring, in the thread Asheville City Council applicants: Who to choose?

Forum moderator Zen reposted some Questions about WPVM from blog commentor Sham69, many of which get to the basic operation of the low-power community-radio station.

On the national-news front, forum posters have been in an ongoing debate about capitalism and socialism (a common topic on the forums, actually) through lens of the “not an option” possibility of a GM Bankruptcy.

For those of you who are curious about the impact of the economic crunch of the last few years on the newspaper industry, Xpress Publisher Jeff Fobes gives us a Rare peak at a Gannett paper’s profit and loss (first three quarters 2007).

On the flip side of that coin, Multimedia Editor Jason Sandford started a discussion on The future of journalism/citizen journalism/participatory media that seems to be attracting some interesting perspectives on how the business model of newsgathering will need to change in the digital world.

One eternally interesting question on the Internet is the morality versus cost of too-good-to-be-true software deals, as is examined in Cheap Software or Immoral Software?

A discussion on the definition of trolling may also prove to be interesting in coming weeks, as forum users, moderators and admins alike continue to find just the right tone for discussion.

And a new subforum focusing on area neighborhoods was launched this week. The first topic? Weaverville starts mixed-paper recycling.

That’s it for this week. Don’t see a topic you’d like to discuss? Why not start your own on the Mountain Xpress forums? If you are registered user, you already have a forum account. If not, why not create one?

Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

  1. Piffy!

which probably won’t make much sense unless you’re listening to the podcast as you read the thread

I find that all “our” threads make far more sense while listening to ashevillefm.org (live and archived!)
