Asheville City Council preview: Jan. 27 meeting

Having recently done away with regular work sessions, Asheville City Council plans to hold a pre-meeting work session before its Jan. 27 formal session to discuss annexation and issues surrounding the water agreement.

Then, on with the regular agenda, where Council will discuss its state and federal legislative priorities, consider applying for a federally funded Neighborhood Stabilization grant and suggest to the U.S. Congress Council’s ideas for an economic-stimulus package.

Also incoming is a presentation on N.C. Department of Transportation funding pools such as the one used to pay for upgrades on a road through Mission Hospitals, and two city parks get some attention as well.

Asheville City Council meets on the second floor of City Hall, conducting a work session a 3 p.m. followed by a regular meeting a 5 p.m.

    Subject: Asheville’s Stimulus Wish List

    Dear Mayor, Mr. Jackson, and Mr. Oast:

    Once again there has been a major media article highlighting Asheville’s participation in the anticipated Federal economic stimulus plan. We were highlighted as submitting a list covering “122 million” in requests. Once again, I would like to share concerns about our participation in this initiative without public deliberation and council discussion.

    This unilateral action by city staff and the Mayor involving such significant dollars seems highly irregular. I will be bringing this issue up formally during our “Other Business” section of the agenda tomorrow night for further discussion. My specific interest will be in addressing the appropriateness of unilateral action by the Mayor and staff and establishing a procedure for public deliberation of the merits of these requests that have evidently been submitted on the city’s behalf.
